The Manila Fire Department received a 2012 Freightliner from the Forestry Commission which will be converted into a tanker truck. The truck was provided through a grant and the department had to pay $1,350 for repairs.

Fire Chief Tracey Reinhart said the department has six months to get the work done and have it in service. Representatives from the Forestry Commission will visit in six months and then again in a year.

The winch will be removed from the back of the truck and a 2,000 gallon tank will be attached. It will be painted and equipped with lights and siren.

“If we have the work done and the truck is still in use, the Forestry Commission will sign the title over to the city,” Reinhart said.

Money raised from the recent barbecue festival will be used to help with the work to convert the truck.

“If we need to we will have a fundraiser to help finish the work,” Reinhart said.

Manila Fire Department joined with the Milligan Ridge Fire Department recently and a tank from one of their older trucks will be used.

With the help of city workers, they will be able to get the tank on the truck and then it will be ready for painting and other upgrades needed.

Firefighter Sonny Ray Dill said the tanker will be a great asset to the department. "It will give us a good supply of water when we are in a rural area."

Reinhart and other members of the Manila Fire Department expressed their appreciation to the Forestry Commission for giving back to the communities and to the community for their support.
