OSCEOLA -- The Mississippi County Quorum Court is looking into developing a new ordinance that would deal with eyesore structures in the county and other "code enforcement type" issues.
County Judge Randy Carney gave QC justices a copy of ordinance 2008-13 from Crittenden County, which deals with the regulation of unsanitary conditions and other property related issues on a county level.
Currently, Mississippi County doesn't have any similar ordinances in place, essentially allowing to people living out in the county to "do what they want" with dilapidated and unsightly properties, according to Carney.
Carney asked the justices to be prepared to discuss the issue in more depth during March's regular monthly meeting.
In other news, the QC unanimously passed an ordinance appropriating an unfunded position for the Mississippi County Sheriff's Department to be used as a student resource officer for the Rivercrest School District.
The Rivercrest School Board had requested the position last year, according to Justice Michael White, but at the time the county couldn't fund the position. The school districted revisited its budget and was able to come up with funding for the position, all the Sheriff's Office will provide is an old patrol unit for the officer and possibly uniforms.
The person being considered for the position is retired Blytheville Police Capt. Damon Travis.
